Unseen Magic: Through the Lens, Beyond the Glass

A book in progress by Hope VanCleaf

Our Story

I never know what my lens has captured until I get home.

That is the particular magic of this work. For years I have stood outside the iconic windows of Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue — camera raised, shutter clicking — capturing what my eyes could see. It was only later, downloading images at my compter, that I discovered what my lens had seen that my eye had not.

Light sources invisible to the naked eye. Reflections infusing with the glass, and through that alchemy, the mannequins — transported. No longer performing their seasonal roles behind the glass. Freed from its confines. Dancing among the trees. Strolling along Fifth Avenue. Holding court or a piece of cake to passersby.

Over the years, I have come to know them. Their names, personalities, and secrets. Building trust, in time, I have become their confidant.

Unseen Magic: Through the Lens, Beyond the Glass, is the first in series of books pairing my photographs with original short fiction — stories told in the intimate space between artist and subject, between what the eye sees and what the lens reveals.

This is their world. I was simply the one with the camera.
